Debabrata Saikia Calls for Citizens’ Panel to Monitor Zubeen Garg Death Case

Sivasagar: Debabrata Saikia, MLA from Nazira and Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, has urged the people of Assam to form a Citizens’ Justice Monitoring Committee to ensure justice in the death case of noted singer-composer Zubeen Garg. Saikia proposed that the committee include retired judges, senior advocates, law professors, human rights activists, and civil society representatives. He expressed concern that six months after Garg’s mysterious death in Singapore, doubts persist among the public regarding the judicial process.

Raising questions over the investigation, Saikia pointed out that the bank account of the prime accused, Shyamkanu Mahanta, was recently defrozen following a court order citing loopholes in the chargesheet filed by the state’s Special Investigation Team (SIT). He said this has led to fears of possible political influence in the case. According to Saikia, the proposed committee would monitor court proceedings, analyse legal documents, and communicate developments to the public in a transparent manner. It would also assist the family of the late artiste with legal research and maintain a digital archive of case-related records.

He clarified that the body would not interfere with judicial proceedings but would function as an independent observer to ensure accountability. Saikia also pledged financial support for the initiative and appealed to members of the legal fraternity, media, students, and the public to come forward and participate, stressing the need to ensure that justice is delivered without delay.
