Debabrata Saikia Dismisses BJP Switch Rumours, Calls Claims ‘Misleading’

Nazira: Senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has firmly rejected speculation about his possible defection to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), terming such claims as “misleading” and aimed at confusing the public.

Speaking at a press conference at his residence in Simaluguri under Nazira, Saikia clarified that he remains committed to the Indian National Congress and its ideology. His remarks come amid political unrest in the state Congress following the resignation of senior leader Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently joined the BJP. Reacting to Bordoloi’s move, Saikia described it as “unfortunate,” noting that the leader had served the Congress for nearly three decades and had been given significant responsibilities by the party. He termed the sudden shift as difficult to accept and a “betrayal” of the party’s principles.

Saikia also responded strongly to remarks by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had reportedly suggested that Saikia might join the BJP in the future. Rejecting the claim outright, Saikia said he would “never accept the ideology of a communal party.” Reaffirming his loyalty, Saikia stated that he has been associated with the Congress since his college days and would continue to serve as a dedicated “soldier” of the party. He also condemned what he called “false propaganda” regarding his defection, alleging it was intended to demoralise party workers. Urging restraint, Saikia appealed to political leaders to avoid spreading misinformation that could mislead the public.
