Debabrata Saikia Hints at Possible BJP Move by Bhupen Borah

Debabrata Saikia on February 17 indicated that former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah could be heading towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a day after Borah tendered his resignation from the party.

Speaking to the media, Saikia said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as an elected head of government, deserves to be welcomed wherever he goes. “The Chief Minister should be welcomed wherever he goes because he is the elected CM of Assam,” Saikia remarked.

However, the Congress veteran expressed concern over recent internal developments within the Indian National Congress.

Referring to Borah’s recent statements critical of the party, Saikia said, “Now, Bhupen Borah has started abusing the Congress. I feel that Bhupen Borah will join the BJP, but I cannot say what is on his mind.”

The remarks assume significance at a time when the Assam Congress is grappling with internal dissent and an evolving political narrative ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Borah, long regarded as a prominent face of the party in the state, has recently adopted a confrontational stance, fuelling speculation about a possible political realignment.

While Borah has not issued any official confirmation regarding a move to the BJP, Saikia’s comments are likely to intensify speculation and underscore emerging fault lines within the opposition camp.
