Guwahati, Feb 18: Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on February 18 made it clear that he has no intention of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that politics should be guided by public service, policy and ideals.
Speaking to the media, the senior leader of the Indian National Congress said that anyone committed to public service would pursue politics with a focus on principles rather than personal advancement.
“Anyone who has public service at heart and wants to work as a public servant will do so for policy and ideals,” Saikia said. He added that he does not share “good feelings” for the BJP, alleging that the party divides Assamese society in the name of ideology. “So I will not join the BJP,” he stated.
Saikia also responded to the resignation of former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Borah from the Congress.
“Let him go. I will give him my blessings,” Saikia remarked. He recalled working closely with Borah and acknowledged the guidance he received from him during his early days as a legislator.
“When I first became a new MLA in 2001, he advised me on how to present my views in the Assembly. He gave me good advice,” Saikia said. “He was my president, and we worked together.”
Saikia added that he was unaware of the reasons behind Borah’s resignation but expressed respect for the mentorship and support he had received from him as a first-time member of the Assembly.
