A Delhi court on November 3 directed the police to take no coercive action against Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam until November 5 while issuing notice to the Delhi Police on his anticipatory bail plea in a sexual harassment case.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh sought the police’s response and directed the investigating officer to appear with the case file at the next hearing. The court will consider the Inner Manipur MP’s plea on November 5.
The development came a day after the Delhi High Court stayed JNU’s order terminating Akoijam’s services and listed the matter for further hearing in January 2027.
JNU dismissed Akoijam in October following sexual harassment allegations. He described his termination as a “witch hunt” and questioned whether the university had followed due process.
The Delhi Police registered an FIR against him on October 12, following complaints filed by at least 11 female students in May. They alleged that he invited students to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some also accused him of making obscene and inappropriate remarks during classes.
The FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station based on a complaint and documents submitted by JNU Chief Security Officer. The complaint stated that the university’s Internal Committee had investigated allegations from several complainants and forwarded its findings and observations to the police.
According to the FIR, the committee examined witness statements, defence witness accounts and other material before reaching its findings.
