North Lakhimpur: The Deori Assong Sixth Schedule Demand Committee has renewed its call for the inclusion of the Deori community under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Addressing a press conference in North Lakhimpur on Thursday, committee leaders asserted that the Deoris, recognised as a Scheduled Tribe since the beginning, are entitled to Sixth Schedule protections to fulfil their political, social, and developmental aspirations.
The leaders noted that although the Deori Autonomous Council (DAC) was established to ensure the social, economic, and cultural progress of the community, it has yet to be granted Sixth Schedule status. They argued that such inclusion is essential for the council to secure greater financial and administrative autonomy.

“Bringing the DAC under the Sixth Schedule will empower it to safeguard land rights, protect community resources, and preserve the cultural heritage of the Deori people,” the committee stated.
The leaders emphasised that Sixth Schedule status would strengthen self-governance and provide the necessary framework for the holistic development of the Deori community, urging the government to consider their long-standing demand without further delay.
