Dibrugarh Leads Assam with Record 300 Women-Run Polling Booths

Dibrugarh: In a major push towards inclusive and gender-sensitive elections, Dibrugarh district has established 300 all-women polling stations for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections—the highest number in Assam. According to district officials, a total of 1,322 polling stations have been set up across six Assembly constituencies, with the all-women booths emerging as a key initiative to promote women’s participation and leadership in the electoral process. These stations will be entirely managed by female personnel, including presiding officers and polling staff.

The move reflects growing confidence in women’s role in election management and aims to strengthen gender representation in democratic institutions. Officials noted that the enthusiasm and strong performance of women personnel during training sessions contributed significantly to scaling up the number of such booths this year. District Commissioner Bikram Kairi said elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure smooth polling. “Material and EVM distribution is being conducted efficiently with 51 counters set up at Dibrugarh Polytechnic,” he stated, adding that all 1,322 polling stations will have webcasting facilities for real-time monitoring and transparency.

Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Abhijit Dilip confirmed that polling personnel have begun collecting materials and will soon depart for their respective stations. Adequate deployment of police, Home Guards, and CAPF personnel has been ensured to maintain security. Special arrangements have also been made for remote and riverine areas, where polling teams will travel by boat to ensure voter access. With over 10 lakh voters expected to cast their votes on April 9, the initiative marks a significant step in promoting inclusive and participatory elections in Assam.
