Digboi: More than seven months after the mysterious disappearance of local businessman Putul Sarmah, the case remains unresolved, prompting his family to seek urgent intervention from the Crime Investigation Department Assam Police. Sarmah, proprietor of Prasanna Welding Industries and a long-time associate of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, went missing on the night of August 12, 2025, after leaving his office in Digboi. A missing report was filed at Digboi Police Station on August 14, but despite months of investigation, no concrete breakthrough has been achieved.
According to police records, Sarmah was last seen leaving his office around 9:38 pm. CCTV footage later traced him walking along NH-315 near Golai and reaching Powai Centre around 12:10 am. Beyond that, no further movement has been recorded. Investigations revealed that shortly before his disappearance, an employee and a woman had visited his office, followed by an alleged argument between Sarmah and his wife, Namita Sarmah. The next morning, his personal belongings—including mobile phones, ATM cards and identity documents—were found abandoned at the office.

Police have since examined CCTV footage, call records and possible transit points, and even extended searches towards Arunachal Pradesh. A case (Digboi P.S. Case No. 130/2025) has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, but the investigation has yielded no definitive leads. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Sarmah’s son, Darshan Sarmah, has appealed for a CID-led probe, stating that the prolonged uncertainty continues to affect both the family and their decades-old business. The family hopes that a fresh investigation may finally unravel the mystery.
