Digboi Mahotsav–2026 to Celebrate from January 25

Digboi: The historic oil town of Digboi in Assam is all set to resonate with colour, culture and creative expression as Digboi Mahotsav–2026 will be held from January 25 to February 1 at the Digboi Refinery Ground. Conceived as a grand celebration of Assam’s rich cultural heritage, the festival will feature a series of All-Assam–level competitions, performances and intellectual engagements, drawing participants from across the state. The Mahotsav is being organised for the first time by Prayas, a government-registered voluntary organisation, in association with Zubeen Garg Anuragi Mancha, Digboi. With a total prize pool of Rs 1 lakh, the initiative aims to promote artistic excellence while strengthening Digboi’s cultural identity.

The competitive segment will begin on January 25 with a drawing competition for school students in three age-based categories. This will be followed by an All-Assam debate competition on January 26 focusing on the role of social media in improving mutual relationships. Devotional music will take centre stage on January 28 with the All-Assam Diha Naam Competition. On January 30, two memorial song competitions dedicated to Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg will celebrate Assam’s musical legacy. The festival will also feature an All-Assam Bhaona Dialogue Competition on January 31, highlighting classical theatrical traditions.

Jiten Dutta, president of the Organising Committee, said Digboi, home to Asia’s oldest oil refinery, holds immense historical and tourism potential. He added that cultural festivals like Digboi Mahotsav are crucial in showcasing the town’s heritage and attracting visitors from beyond the region.
