BJP MP Dilip Saikia on 2 December accused the Opposition of repeatedly disrupting Parliament, saying they had adopted the same obstructionist approach seen in the previous session. He said Opposition parties had earlier stalled both Houses over the State-wise Index of Representation (SIR) and were again preventing constructive engagement.
Saikia argued that if the Opposition believed there were legal flaws in the SIR framework, they should approach the Supreme Court or challenge the Election Commission instead of paralysing parliamentary proceedings. “If they have a valid legal issue, they should go to the Supreme Court. They should fight against the Election Commission. Why are they disrupting the House? The House belongs to the people,” he said.
Defending the Centre, he stated that the BJP supported the SIR mechanism, noting that similar systems had already been implemented in Bihar and several other states. He added that the government was prepared to discuss every issue, but the Opposition’s “attitude was not right,” resulting in continuous disorder.
The Winter Session, one of the shortest in recent years, saw repeated disruptions as Opposition MPs protested over electoral reforms, unemployment and federalism. The legislative deadlock persisted as both sides blamed each other for stalled proceedings.
