District-Level Conference on Child Rights Held in Tezpur

Tezpur: A District Level Conference on “Key Issues of Child Rights” was held on Thursday at the Tezpur Convention Centre in Dolabari, organised by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights in collaboration with the Sonitpur District Administration. The conference was chaired by District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das and attended by Assistant Commissioner and In-Charge DCPO Chayanika Hazarika, Inspector of Schools Prabhat Das and Joint Director of Health Services Dr. Biman Sharma along with officials from various departments.

The programme aimed to strengthen awareness and improve implementation of child protection laws and institutional mechanisms at the district level. In his address, the District Commissioner emphasised the need for coordinated action among stakeholders to safeguard children’s rights and welfare. An audio-visual presentation highlighted critical concerns such as child marriage, child labour, trafficking and other forms of exploitation, while also promoting awareness about the Child Helpline 1098 and the adoption procedures under the Central Adoption Resource Authority.

During the technical sessions, Dr. Gitanjali Ghosh of Tezpur University spoke on bullying and cyberbullying in schools, stressing the need for preventive mechanisms. Former Child Welfare Committee chairperson Abha Borah discussed building safer environments for children, while legal expert Hemanta Dahal addressed issues related to prevention of child trafficking.

Participants also discussed the effective implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Officials from the education, health and police departments, child protection units, school authorities and civil society organisations attended the conference and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening child protection mechanisms in the district.
