DULIAJAN, Sept 9: The Women’s Cell of Duliajan College organised an awareness programme on “Prevention of Acid Attacks and Support and Sensitisation towards Survivors” on Tuesday to sensitise students to the issue and promote empathy, dignity and respect towards survivors.
Dr Ankita Barua, associate professor in the Department of Education and convenor of the Women’s Cell, anchored the programme and outlined its objectives, stressing the need for greater awareness and sensitivity towards survivors.
College principal Dr Lok Bikash Gogoi, in his welcome address, described acid attacks as a serious social concern and emphasised the importance of sensitising students to help prevent such incidents. He said sustained awareness was necessary to ensure survivors received empathy, dignity and support from society.
Advocate and Naharkatia Bar Association secretary Swarnalata Goswami was the resource person. She discussed the severity and social impact of acid attacks, referred to their history and highlighted the contribution of acid attack survivor and rights activist Laxmi Agarwal in advocating for survivors’ rights.
Goswami urged young people to respect personal boundaries and mutual dignity in relationships. She stressed that disagreements or separation should never lead to retaliation and called for respect for individual decisions, independence and dignity.
Duliajan College vice-principal Jyoti Singh Pathak also spoke on the issue.
Faculty members and a large number of students attended the programme. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Puja Agarwal, faculty member of the Department of Economics.
