Shillong, May 20: Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district has initiated preparations for the 2026 Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with district authorities briefing political parties on timelines, verification procedures and the role of booth-level agents in the upcoming exercise.
As one of the important districts under the state’s Phase-III revision process, East Khasi Hills currently comprises 17 Assembly constituencies and 1,021 polling stations, making the revision exercise a significant administrative undertaking.
Officials stated that booth-level officers will undertake house-to-house verification between June 30 and July 29 as part of the process aimed at updating and verifying voter information. The draft electoral roll is scheduled to be published on August 5, after which citizens will have time until September 4 to submit claims and objections. The final electoral roll is expected to be released on October 7.
According to the district administration, the electoral roll of 2005 will function as the “legacy roll” for reference purposes during the revision process, in accordance with guidelines issued by the Election Commission.
Field verification has been identified as a major component of the exercise, with Electoral Registration Officers tasked with supervising scrutiny and implementation across different constituencies. To ensure transparency, political parties have also been advised to appoint booth-level agents for every polling station to monitor verification activities and assist during the claims and objections process.
The administration also plans to involve Dorbar Shnongs in awareness activities to inform residents about house visits by booth-level officers and the procedures related to hearings for voter list corrections.
Officials emphasised that active public participation and timely verification would play an important role in maintaining accurate and inclusive electoral rolls ahead of future elections.
