Imphal, Dec 29: Security forces arrested eight alleged extortionists linked to the proscribed PREPAK (PRO) in coordinated operations across Manipur on December 28, delivering a significant setback to organised extortion rackets operating in the state. The arrests were carried out at multiple locations as part of sustained intelligence-based operations.
According to security officials, six active cadres were apprehended from different areas under the jurisdiction of Nongpok Sekmai police station. Those taken into custody were identified as Moirangthem Boboy Singh, also known as Lalngam, aged 54, from Yairipok Kakmayai Mayai Leikai; Thoudam Tomba Singh alias Thengainaba, 63, of Soibam Leikai Khalabung Leirak; Konsam Romenkumar Singh alias Samitpa, 44, from Iroisemba Mayai Leikai; Laishram Nanao Singh alias Lukhoi, 35, of Itam Nungoi; and Takhellambam Kishan Singh alias Nanao, 30, along with Takhellambam Washington Singh alias Ibungo, 22, both residents of Chanam Santrok Maning Leikai.
During the operation, security personnel recovered a double-barrel gun along with two mobile phones and two SIM cards from the arrested individuals, indicating their alleged involvement in extortion-related activities. Officials said the seized items are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
In a separate operation conducted on the same day, security forces arrested two more cadres belonging to PREPAK (PRO) (G-5) faction from Yairipok Pechi under Yairipok police station in Thoubal district. The accused were identified as Lantham Poireiton Meitei alias Lanthouba, 25, of Chanam Santrok Awang Leikai, and Chirom Rostam Singh alias Chiromba, 25, from Kongba Laikhuram Leirak.
Security agencies said investigations are continuing to uncover additional links, operational structures and financial networks associated with the extortion activities. Officials added that further arrests could follow as efforts intensify to dismantle organised militant-linked extortion in the state.
