Agartala: In a shocking case of superstition-driven violence, a 63-year-old tribal woman was brutally killed on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Abhicharan village under the Sidhai Police Station limits of West Tripura district.
The victim, identified as Nandarani Debbarma, had reportedly gone missing earlier this week. Acting on a tip-off, police launched a search operation and later exhumed her body from a nearby forest on October 26.
Sidhai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ajit Kumar Chakma said an FIR was registered following the recovery of the body, leading to the arrest of three individuals from the same locality on Thursday for their alleged involvement in the murder.
Preliminary investigation revealed that some villagers believed two families in the area had fallen ill due to “black magic” allegedly practised by the woman. Driven by this superstition, a mob reportedly attacked her house, lynched her, and later buried the body in the forest to destroy evidence.
Police have intensified interrogation of the accused, while further investigation into the incident is underway.
