Imphal, Aug 4: The principal of the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Zeikhuluang Loktak Project in Manipur was removed from his post on August 3 after allegations of food shortages and inadequate basic facilities for students triggered administrative action.
Reports claimed that students at the residential school had been facing severe shortages of food and other essential supplies, with some allegedly going hungry and falling ill due to a lack of proper meals. Videos circulating on social media reportedly showed students receiving hospital treatment after complaining of weakness.
Amid growing concern, the Manipur Society for Tribal Educational Institution (MSTEI), under the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department, issued an order relieving the principal of charge with immediate effect. The order stated that the principal has been transferred and attached to the office of the Member Secretary, MSTEI, until further orders.
The school, established under the EMRS scheme to provide quality education and residential facilities to tribal students, is facing allegations of failing to meet students’ basic needs.
Those raising the issue have called for a thorough inquiry into the allegations and urged the authorities to ensure adequate food, healthcare, accommodation and other essential facilities for students while taking corrective measures to prevent a recurrence.
