A rare golden langur was electrocuted to death in Kuchiya Kata village near the Kakoijana Reserved Forest in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Friday morning, renewing concerns over the safety of the endangered species and prompting demands for stronger conservation measures.
The incident sparked outrage among local residents and wildlife conservationists, who alleged that repeated appeals to the government and district administration to address threats to the primates have not received adequate attention.
Expressing frustration over recurring incidents involving golden langurs, residents warned that they would launch a blockade of the national highway if the authorities failed to implement immediate measures to prevent further deaths of the endangered animals.
Following the incident, officials from the Forest Department, the Electricity Department and the district administration, including the Deputy Commissioner, visited the site to assess the circumstances surrounding the animal’s death and review the situation.
The death of the golden langur cast a pall over the village, with local residents gathering to pay their final respects before bidding farewell to the endangered primate, underscoring the community’s emotional bond with the species and growing concern over its conservation.
