Lakhimpur: In yet another case of fake gold fraud in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, a man from Bihar was cheated of ₹2 lakh by fraudsters who lured him into buying a counterfeit gold artefact. The incident took place at Phukan Dalani village in Nowboicha under Laluk Police Station.
The victim, identified as Lal Mohan Ram from Aurangabad, Bihar, said he had been in contact with a fake gold trader for over a month. The trader convinced him to purchase a boat-shaped object claimed to be made of gold for ₹2,00,000, with a promise that it could be sold later in Bihar for ₹6,00,000. Tempted by the profit, Ram travelled to Harmutty by train to complete the deal.

On arrival, three individuals picked him up on a motorcycle (registration number AS07U3497) and took him to a house, where the transaction was completed. After handing over the artefact and collecting the money, the sellers instructed Ram to wait at Harmutty railway junction to travel with them to Bihar. However, when he reached the station, all their mobile numbers were found switched off.
Sensing fraud, Ram immediately reported the matter at Harmutty Police Outpost. Police later escorted him to Laluk Police Station, where an investigation was launched. Acting swiftly, a joint team from Harmutty and Laluk police carried out a night operation and arrested the prime accused, Mofazul Islam.
