Guwahati: In a poignant tribute to the music legend Zubeen Garg, this year’s Diwali celebrations in Fancy Bazar will be observed without grandeur, decorative lighting, or fireworks. The decision marks a collective gesture of remembrance by the community to honour the beloved singer’s enduring legacy.
The Fancy Bazar Friends Club announced that all festive extravagance will be forgone this year as a mark of respect for Zubeen Garg. Instead, the marketplace will glow with the soft light of thousands of earthen lamps (diyas) to symbolise love, remembrance, and gratitude towards the artist who inspired millions.
Organizers stated that no buildings in Fancy Bazar will display bright decorative lights, nor will there be any fireworks or loud festivities. The area will observe a silent and emotional Diwali, transforming the usually vibrant commercial hub into a space of quiet reflection.
Residents have expressed deep emotional support for the initiative, describing it as a fitting way to remember a man whose songs became the soundtrack of Assamese life. “This Diwali is not about celebration — it’s about remembrance,” said one local shopkeeper.
The tribute is expected to draw visitors from across the city, with many planning to light diyas in honour of Zubeen Garg, whose legacy continues to illuminate hearts across Assam and beyond.
