TURA, Oct 24: Former Meghalaya transport minister Pa Ismail R. Marak has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in a move expected to bolster the party’s organisational network in the Garo Hills region.
Marak formally joined the party in Tura in the presence of BJP Meghalaya in-charge and MP Kanad Purkayastha, state co-in-charge Numal Momin and state president Rikman G. Momin.
A veteran political figure in Meghalaya, Marak was elected MLA from Rongram constituency in 2008 and later served as a member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), representing Asanang constituency in 2015. He also held the state’s transport portfolio.
The BJP leadership welcomed his induction, describing it as an addition to the party’s political and organisational strength in Garo Hills.
In a further organisational move, the party’s central leadership has assigned Marak responsibility for overseeing future inductions. The role is expected to help coordinate the entry of new members and expand the party’s network in the region.
His entry comes as the BJP seeks to broaden its presence across Meghalaya and other parts of the Northeast. Marak’s experience in the state legislature and the autonomous district council could help the party strengthen its links with local political networks in Garo Hills.
