Four Arrested in Assam Land Registration Fraud Case After Sonapur Police Crackdown

Guwahati, April 27: Sonapur Police has uncovered a land-registration fraud case and arrested four individuals from Sonitpur district on April 27.

The case surfaced after a 70-year-old resident of Kachutoli lodged a complaint alleging that he had been cheated by a person impersonating an employee of the Sonapur Circle Office. The accused reportedly collected Rs 17,260 over a month on the pretext of facilitating land registration before becoming untraceable.

Subsequent verification by authorities confirmed that no such individual was employed at the Circle Office, establishing the incident as a case of deliberate impersonation and fraud.

Acting on the complaint, the EGPD team launched an investigation and tracked the accused to Tezpur, where four persons were apprehended during the operation.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Riyajul Islam (22), Saiful Islam (26), Mojamil Haque (40), and Istaqul Hussain (21).

Police said legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused under relevant provisions of the law, and further investigation is underway.
