Four held in Abhayapuri crackdown on illegal gambling during festival

BONGAIGAON, April 22: Police in Abhayapuri carried out a crackdown on illegal gambling, arresting four individuals during a raid linked to activities organised around the Lungai Pahar Puja and Mahamela.

Officials said a gambling racket had allegedly set up an operation under the guise of local festivities, drawing participants to the illegal setup. Acting on specific inputs, police conducted a raid and dismantled the operation.

The arrested have been identified as Amir Hussain of Tilapara, Taher Ali of Dumuria Part I, Zahirul Islam of Tilapara, and Hashem Ali of Dumuria Part II.

During the operation, police seized cash amounting to ₹46,130, along with mobile phones, voter ID cards, ATM cards and wallets. Materials used for gambling, including dabbu, dice and tokens, were also recovered from the site.

Police said further investigation is under way to identify other individuals involved in the network and to determine the extent of the illegal activities.
