Imphal, Jan 17: Manipur Police and security forces have intensified their counter-insurgency drive with the arrest of four active cadres associated with proscribed militant outfits across Bishnupur and Imphal West districts. The coordinated operations, carried out at multiple locations, resulted in the recovery of extortion money, mobile phones and identity documents, officials said.
Police sources stated that on January 16, an active member of PREPAK (Pro), identified as Wairokpam Atu Meitei alias Boiton, was apprehended from Phoijing Tera Makhong under Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district. The 22-year-old cadre was arrested from his home locality, and a mobile phone was seized during the operation.
On the same day, another active cadre of the banned PREPAK outfit, Malem Heisnam alias Ngaiba, was taken into custody. The 21-year-old, a resident of Karang Maning Leikai under Keibul Lamjao Police Station, was arrested from the Thanga Chingang Playground area within the same police jurisdiction in Bishnupur district.
In a separate operation in Imphal West district, security forces arrested a woman allegedly involved in extortion activities linked to the RPF/PLA outfit. The accused, Chabungbam Thaibema Devi alias Medha, aged 49, was picked up from her residence at Tera Loukrakpam Leikai under Lamphel Police Station. During the search, security personnel recovered Rs 1 lakh in extortion cash, along with a mobile handset and an Aadhaar card.
Officials said investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the arrested individuals’ involvement in militant activities and extortion networks operating in the region. Security agencies have reaffirmed their resolve to continue sustained operations against banned organisations to curb insurgency and ensure the maintenance of law and order in Manipur.
