Four Sribhumi Jail Staff Arrested Over Alleged Supply of Mobile Phones and Contraband to Inmates

Four employees of the Sribhumi District Jail have been arrested for allegedly facilitating the supply of prohibited items, including mobile phones and other contraband, to inmates in exchange for money, police said.

The arrested officials have been identified as Assistant Jail Superintendent Rudra Deuri, Assistant Jail Superintendent Biswajit Barua, Head Warder Musahid Ali Laskar and Warder Subhashish Ghosh.

The accused were produced before a court in Sribhumi and subsequently remanded in custody. The court has directed that they be produced before a court in Guwahati on June 12.

According to police, the four officials were allegedly involved in providing inmates with mobile phones, tobacco products and sharp objects in return for monetary benefits.

Additional Superintendent of Police Trinayan Bhuiyan said the investigation stems from a search operation carried out on February 2 at the district jail by a team led by Senior Superintendent of Police Leena Doley. During the raid, authorities recovered 29 mobile phones from prisoners, besides chargers, sharp objects, hookahs, bidis, cigarettes, lighters and other banned items.

Following the seizure, a case was registered and a detailed investigation was initiated. Police said that statements recorded from inmates during the course of the probe helped widen the investigation, which ultimately led to the arrest of two jail officers, two warders and 25 inmates in connection with the case.

The investigation is continuing, and further action is expected based on the findings of the probe.
