Imphal, March 24: Fresh violence was reported from Mongkot Chepu village in Manipur on Tuesday morning, less than a day after two farmers were injured in an earlier attack, escalating concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the region.
According to residents, heavily armed militants launched a coordinated assault around 7:30 am from the Litan–Sareikhong side, using mortars and automatic rifles, indicating access to advanced weaponry and a high degree of planning. A villager sustained injuries after being hit by splinters from a mortar shell, underscoring the intensity of the firing.
The attack triggered panic across the area, with civilians rushing to take cover. Schoolchildren were among those affected, as gunfire and explosions were reported near educational institutions. Visuals circulating online showed students sheltering inside classrooms, crouching on the floor as a precaution amid the ongoing firing.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage from Litan have further raised concerns, with locals claiming that gunshots were heard from areas close to the Litan Police Station. The footage reportedly captures the sound of automatic weapons being fired in proximity to security installations.
Residents alleged that the firing was directed towards Kuki-inhabited areas, forcing people to remain indoors amid fears of further escalation. The latest incident has heightened anxiety among locals and brought renewed focus on security arrangements in the conflict-prone region.
