Fresh Violence in Litan Sareikhong Sparks Protests by Tangkhul Women

Imphal, Feb 13: Litan Sareikhong village witnessed further unrest on February 12, as three more houses were set ablaze despite heightened security measures deployed by state authorities to contain the violence. Sources reported that the incident was followed by gunfire allegedly from the opposite side of the village, though no casualties have been confirmed so far.

The continuing unrest has prompted women from Tangkhul villages to stage protests, condemning the violence despite the presence of Central security forces. The demonstrators demanded the immediate withdrawal of these forces, expressing a lack of confidence in their ability to ensure local safety. “Despite the heavy security presence, villagers continue to face repeated attacks involving sophisticated weapons,” the protesters said, asserting that they could no longer rely on Central personnel for protection.

According to accounts from the area, suspected armed militants carried out an attack on Litan Sareikhong that reportedly lasted nearly two hours. Protesters alleged that Central security personnel were shielding these armed groups. Observers noted that militants in combat attire were seen moving freely in the nearby Mongkot Chepu village, while residents of Litan Sareikhong were allegedly barred from entering their homes and asked to vacate the area.

Sources highlighted that frequent gunfire targeting the Tangkhul Naga community has continued in the region, underscoring ongoing security challenges despite official deployments. The incidents and protests reflect mounting local frustration over the inability to control militant activity and ensure the safety of vulnerable communities in Litan Sareikhong.
