Garima Saikia Garg Demands Justice, Calls for Broader Accountability in Zubeen Garg Death Case

Guwahati, Jan 17: Amid mounting public attention and ongoing legal proceedings in the death case of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, urged strict accountability and emphasised the need for a comprehensive investigation. Speaking to the media, she stated that the seven accused, who were produced virtually before the court on Monday, showed no remorse for their alleged involvement.

Describing the incident as “inhuman and unacceptable,” Garima Garg reiterated that the accused must face the harshest punishment under the law. She expressed confidence in the judicial process, citing a robust legal strategy now in place, and praised the newly appointed team of government advocates for presenting precise and well-founded arguments before the court. She also confirmed full cooperation with the Singapore Police, stressing that international coordination remains crucial for the progress of the case.

Highlighting the legal complexities, Garima Garg noted that Singapore’s judicial system operates differently from India’s, and clarified that proceedings there are still at a preliminary stage. She further revealed that repeated requests have been made to include Non-Resident Assamese individuals present on the yacht on September 19, 2025—the day of Zubeen Garg’s death—in the ongoing investigation. She argued that, like the arrested accused, these individuals should also be held responsible for the incident, citing gross negligence as a key factor. An application has once again been submitted to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) seeking their inclusion in the probe.

Meanwhile, Advocate Apurba Sharma, representing the case, confirmed that the hearing for the bail application is scheduled for January 22, while the regular hearing will take place on January 30. He noted that the defence has requested medical attention for the accused due to deteriorating health conditions. Sharma also emphasised the importance of conducting the trial through a special court, asserting that day-to-day hearings are essential to ensure swift justice. “Delays will only weaken public faith. A fast-tracked trial is essential,” he stated.

The case, which has drawn widespread attention across Assam, continues to unfold amid growing demands for accountability, transparency, and a speedy resolution, reflecting the high public and emotional stakes involved in the tragic death of one of the state’s most celebrated cultural icons.
