Gauhati High Court Approves Fast-Track Court for Zubeen Garg Death Case Trial

Guwahati, March 19: The Gauhati High Court has approved the establishment of an exclusive fast-track sessions court to conduct day-to-day hearings in the Zubeen Garg death case, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on March 19.

District Judge Sharmila Bhuyan, currently serving in Baksa, has been nominated to preside over the court. The Chief Minister described the development as a significant step towards ensuring timely justice in a case that has attracted widespread public attention.

According to Sarma, the decision follows approval by Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar, who accepted the state government’s request for a dedicated court to expedite proceedings. The Assam cabinet had earlier resolved to approach the High Court seeking a fast-track mechanism to ensure swift trial in the matter.

Zubeen Garg, 52, died on September 19 last year while swimming in the sea in Singapore during his visit for the fourth North East India Festival. His death led to an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The SIT subsequently filed a chargesheet in a local court in Assam, naming seven individuals in connection with the case. The Chief Minister said the formation of the fast-track court would significantly accelerate the judicial process and reaffirm the government’s commitment to delivering justice without delay.

Sarma also expressed appreciation to the Chief Justice for approving the proposal, stating that the move strengthens the broader effort to ensure accountability through an expedited legal process.
