The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta, a co-singer of late Assamese icon Zubeen Garg, in the case linked to his death in Singapore in September 2025. She is the first accused in the case to secure bail, according to available details.
Mahanta was granted bail on a bond of Rs 50,000. The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested her on October 2, 2025, after hours of questioning. She had remained lodged in Haflong Jail since her arrest.
Garg, 52, died on September 19, 2025, while swimming in the sea off Singapore during a visit to attend the North East India Festival. His death prompted widespread protests across Assam, with people demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The state government subsequently formed an SIT, which arrested several people who had accompanied the singer to Singapore. Those arrested included festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, and band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta.
The SIT later filed a chargesheet accusing Amritprava Mahanta, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Sharma and Goswami of murder. Garg’s cousin, Sandipan Garg, was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while his personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya faced charges of criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.
The investigation concerns the circumstances of Garg’s death during the Singapore trip, with investigators alleging a conspiracy rather than accidental drowning. The allegations against the accused remain subject to judicial proceedings.
Earlier, two of Garg’s personal security officers had obtained bail in a separate case involving alleged financial transactions.
