Gaurav Gogoi Accuses Assam Government of Ignoring Inflation, Focuses on Congress Revival Ahead of Polls

Guwahati, June 8: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday accused the BJP-led Assam government of failing to address rising prices of essential commodities and fuel, alleging that the concerns of ordinary citizens have been sidelined despite the ruling alliance receiving a strong electoral mandate.

Speaking to reporters at Rajiv Bhawan, Gogoi said the government had not lived up to the expectations of the people and claimed that the continued increase in the prices of daily necessities and petroleum products reflected what he described as its “anti-people character”.

The Congress leader also targeted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that the state administration was more focused on internal political issues than on matters affecting the public. According to Gogoi, discussions surrounding cabinet composition and political power had diverted attention from key concerns such as inflation and market regulation.

He further outlined the Congress party’s strategy ahead of upcoming elections, stating that the organisation is working to reconnect with voters across Assam. Gogoi said a review meeting held at Rajiv Bhawan examined the reasons behind the party’s recent electoral setbacks and deliberated on preparations for future electoral contests.

According to him, the Congress is undertaking fresh outreach efforts and seeks to build what he termed a “New Congress” that is more closely aligned with public expectations. He added that the party plans to intensify its engagement with issues affecting citizens after completing an internal assessment of its recent performances.

Gogoi also revealed that Congress observers have been deputed to all 126 Assembly constituencies to prepare detailed reports, with the findings currently being discussed with the party’s central leadership.

The meeting additionally focused on preparations for the upcoming by-election in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. Among those present were Rakibul Hussain, Debabrata Saikia, Jaiprakash Das, Pranati Phukan, Meera Borthakur, Roselina Tirkey, party legislators and members of the committee constituted for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency.
