Gaurav Gogoi Blames Himanta Biswa Sarma for Sivasagar Newspaper Burning, Alleges Systemic Attack on Media

Guwahati, March 26: Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has held Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responsible for the burning of copies of a local newspaper in Sivasagar, alleging a continuing pattern of hostility towards sections of the media.

Addressing a press conference at Khanapara, Gogoi stated that the Chief Minister has “consistently targeted certain news channels and newspapers”, creating an environment where such incidents can occur. He asserted that the responsibility for the burning of newspapers lies with Sarma, accusing him of repeatedly naming media houses and their owners in public rather than responding to questions raised by journalists.

Gogoi maintained that journalists are performing their duties and that both the press and citizens have the right to question those in power. He alleged that when faced with uncomfortable queries, the Chief Minister resorts to calling out specific media organisations instead of addressing the issues raised.

The Congress leader further claimed that incidents targeting journalists have become frequent, alleging that BJP ministers, MLAs, and workers have been involved in such actions. He also cited instances of journalists being assaulted and police deploying tear gas against them.

Describing the Sivasagar episode as a “planned act”, Gogoi termed it a “systemic attack” on the media. He alleged that the Chief Minister has not only threatened journalists and media owners but has also encouraged party workers, creating a perception that such actions would go unpunished.

He warned media organisations to remain vigilant, stating that the incident could set a precedent for similar acts in the future. Gogoi also criticised the Chief Minister’s response, saying it lacked urgency and seriousness. He pointed out that no concrete action was outlined within 24 hours, adding that the reaction indicated a lack of concern over the attack on the press.

Gogoi further accused Sarma of being an obstacle to democratic values in Assam and suggested that governance and constitutional norms would improve with a change in leadership.

Targeting the BJP, he alleged that party tickets are being distributed to individuals linked to illegal syndicates, claiming that senior leaders are being sidelined while those associated with coal and stone networks are promoted.

Referring to a recent opposition unity rally in Sarbhog, Gogoi described it as successful, while noting that earlier finalisation of alliances could have enabled broader campaigning. He added that with limited time provided by the Election Commission of India, leaders are currently focusing on their respective constituencies, with more joint rallies planned.

On the cancellation of a Congress candidate’s ticket in Barpeta, Gogoi questioned the functioning of the Election Commission, alleging uneven enforcement. He pointed to the presence of ruling party hoardings in Guwahati and claimed harassment of Congress workers in Sonitpur district, particularly in Naduar. He also called for scrutiny into whether returning officers are acting in a partisan manner.
