Guwahati, April 9: Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi cast his vote in the Assembly elections on April 9 and expressed confidence that a “powerful, fearless and new Assam” will emerge after the results.
Gogoi exercised his franchise at a polling station in Jorhat, accompanied by his mother Dolly Gogoi at DCB LP School in Jorhat.
Speaking to reporters, he described the day as crucial for Assam, saying voters would play a decisive role in shaping the state’s future. He added that the next government would protect democratic rights and uphold freedom of expression while working towards the state’s progress.
Gogoi, who is also the Deputy Leader of the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha, is contesting from the Jorhat constituency in Upper Assam. He is locked in a direct contest with Hitendra Nath Goswami of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Dolly Gogoi, recalling earlier elections, said she had previously voted alongside her husband and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. She expressed confidence that her son would secure victory with public support.
Polling for the 126-member Assembly began at 7 a.m., with voters deciding the fate of 722 candidates across the state.
