Gaurav Gogoi Likely to Contest from Jorhat, Signals High-Stakes Battle in Upper Assam

Guwahati, Feb 28: Assam Congress President and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi is likely to contest from the Jorhat Assembly constituency, indicating a high-profile contest in Upper Assam ahead of the state elections.

According to party sources, candidates for nearly 40 Assembly constituencies were finalised during a meeting of the Congress Central Election Committee on February 27 evening. While the final list has not yet been made public, insiders suggest that Gogoi’s potential candidature from Jorhat has been given serious consideration, signalling the party’s strategy of fielding senior leaders in crucial seats.

Jorhat, considered one of Assam’s politically significant constituencies, is expected to witness a keen contest in the upcoming polls.

Sources further stated that the Indian National Congress will release its first list of candidates only after the formal announcement of the Assembly election schedule.

Gogoi, who currently represents Kaliabor in the Lok Sabha and serves as president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has been leading the party’s campaign efforts across the state. His possible entry into the Assembly fray is expected to energise party workers and intensify the political battle in Assam.

With the Central Election Committee clearing 40 seats in the initial phase, the Congress appears to be stepping up its preparations, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral contest in the state.
