GUWAHATI: Jorhat MP and Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has criticised the Assam government’s decision to reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga, alleging that concerns over illegal mining in ecologically sensitive areas remain unaddressed.
In a post on X, Gogoi questioned the appointment of Tuliram Ronghang and Debolal Gorlosa to the State Wildlife Board under the category of “Eminent Conservationist, Ecologist and Environmentalist”.
Gogoi referred to allegations of illegal rat-hole mining at Kala Mati/3 Kilo in Dima Hasao and claimed that Gorlosa and his wife were named in an FIR related to the site following a tragedy in which nine people reportedly died. He also alleged that another case was registered over claims of threatening a key witness.
Regarding Ronghang, Gogoi questioned the role of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in issuing mining leases and permits. He cited observations of the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC), which, according to him, found in 2019 that mining permits were being issued by KAAC officials without legal authority.
Gogoi also referred to a 2025 CEC direction asking KAAC not to issue fresh mining settlements, leases or permits in areas draining into Kaziranga until scientific watershed delineation was completed.
Citing a March 2026 CEC observation, Gogoi questioned mining leases in ecologically sensitive areas and alleged that the government’s approach undermined public sentiment and environmental concerns.
The allegations come amid an ongoing debate over conservation, mining and the proposed changes to Kaziranga’s ESZ.
