Guwahati: Congress MP from Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi, has voiced deep concern over the growing controversies surrounding several reputed universities in the Northeast, including Tezpur University, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), and Gauhati University.
Taking to social media, Gogoi lamented that many of these institutions, once celebrated for their academic excellence, have lately been in the spotlight “for the wrong reasons.” He pointed out that the conduct of certain Vice-Chancellors has led to dissatisfaction among students and faculty, adversely impacting the universities’ overall performance and rankings.
“This has affected the performance and rankings of these universities. I have written to the Prime Minister’s Office regarding Tezpur University, but my concern extends to the entire Northeast region,” Gogoi said, adding that he plans to raise the issue in Parliament. He urged the Centre to uphold transparency, accountability, and academic freedom in higher education institutions across the region.
The Congress MP said he hopes for a constructive response from the PMO to restore credibility and a healthy academic environment in these premier universities.
Gogoi’s remarks came after a delegation comprising members of the Tezpur University Teachers’ Association and student leaders met him recently to present documented grievances and seek his support.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Gogoi stressed that Tezpur University — established under the historic Assam Accord — has long stood as a symbol of higher learning and innovation in the Northeast, and preserving its integrity is crucial for the region’s educational progress.
