Guwahati, Feb 9: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on February 9 held a press conference, led by its president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, to rebut allegations made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over Gogoi’s alleged links to Pakistan and claims concerning his wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi.
Addressing the media, Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of crossing all limits by publicly disclosing personal details related to his minor children during a press interaction attended by national media. He said the children, aged five and nine, were entitled to privacy and should not have been dragged into political controversy.
“The Assam Chief Minister has stooped to such a low level that he exposed details of my children. These details are meant to be private, yet they were made public,” Gogoi said.
Issuing a warning, the Congress leader said his party had exercised restraint despite being aware of personal details related to the Chief Minister’s family. He cautioned against forcing the issue further.
Gogoi said the Congress would explore legal options under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, citing Section 74, and would consult the party’s legal cell in Delhi to pursue the matter through appropriate channels.
The press conference marked a sharp escalation in the political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress in Assam, with the dispute extending from allegations of national security to concerns over the privacy and protection of minors.
