Guwahati, April 6: Escalating the political confrontation in Assam, State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp counterattack against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of misleading the public and vowing to expose alleged irregularities linked to his family’s assets and overseas business interests.
Responding to Sarma’s recent allegations, Gogoi said the Indian National Congress would bring to light what he described as “lies” surrounding the Chief Minister’s family wealth. He raised a series of questions, asking whether Sarma’s family possesses a “Gold Card” in Dubai, owns property in the emirate, and whether such assets were disclosed in his election affidavit. Gogoi asserted that any undisclosed assets could invite disqualification under election laws.
He further called for an investigation by central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate, into the matter.
Intensifying his attack, Gogoi alleged that if the Congress comes to power, it would initiate strict legal action against what he termed “illegal properties and businesses” linked to the Chief Minister’s family. He also levelled broader allegations, claiming links to activities such as cow smuggling and the coal mafia, though no supporting evidence was presented publicly.
The remarks mark a sharp escalation in the ongoing war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress in Assam, with both sides trading serious allegations involving financial impropriety, foreign links and potential legal violations ahead of the Assembly elections.
