Gaurav Gogoi Vows to Protect Assamese Identity and Promote Communal Harmony

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi has pledged to safeguard Assam’s cultural identity and uphold communal harmony, issuing a public commitment that drew inspiration from celebrated Assamese artist Zubeen Garg.

In a statement shared on social media on 21 November, Gogoi said his vision centres on preserving the state’s diverse social fabric while resisting forces he believes are fostering division. He asserted that the Congress will “oppose the communal and casteist forces that sow the seeds of fear, doubt, hatred, and discrimination in Assamese society at every step.”

Gogoi also linked his stance to environmental protection, stressing the importance of safeguarding Assam’s forests, rivers, hills and wildlife. He said protecting natural resources and biodiversity was equally essential to securing the state’s identity and the future of its people.

The Congress leader emphasised inclusivity, asserting that every community—regardless of caste, religion or background—deserves dignity and equal treatment. He said the party remains committed to helping vulnerable groups and maintaining an atmosphere of compassion and coexistence.

Referencing Zubeen Garg as a unifying cultural symbol, Gogoi described the musician as a figure beloved across communities and generations. He concluded his message with the slogans: “Jai Zubeen Da! Jai Maa Assam! Jai Hind!”

The declaration comes at a time of heightened political discourse around identity, belonging and cultural rights in Assam, a state known for its linguistic diversity, ethnic communities and complex socio-political landscape.
