Agartala: A dedicated round-the-clock emergency operation theatre has been commissioned at GB Pant Hospital, significantly strengthening Tripura’s capacity to deliver life-saving surgical care without delay.
The facility has been introduced amid rising pressure on the hospital, which functions as the state’s top referral centre for advanced medical treatment. With 19 major and 10 minor operating theatres already in operation, the hospital performs an average of 30 to 40 major surgeries every day. Emergency cases frequently arrive from district and sub-divisional hospitals, often leaving little room for postponement.
Hospital authorities said the newly commissioned 24×7 emergency OT will ensure immediate surgical intervention for critically ill patients, reducing waiting time and helping prevent avoidable referrals outside the state.
The emergency theatre has been set up within the operating theatre complex of the New Teaching Hospital, Unit One and Two. Officials attributed the initiative to support from the state government and coordinated efforts by the Health Department.
Anaesthesiologist Dr Bhaskar Majumder said the new facility would allow emergency surgeries to be conducted without disrupting scheduled operations. To ensure uninterrupted functioning, the Director of Health Services has approved the deployment of three nursing officers along with additional supporting staff.
Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Kanak Chowdhury said the emergency OT would also help clear the backlog of urgent surgical cases, particularly in the surgery department.
The inauguration was attended by senior doctors, resident medical officers, nursing officers and hospital staff. Hospital authorities further said that another operation theatre will soon be made functional at the Trauma Care Centre, as part of efforts to strengthen emergency healthcare services in the state.
