GCU Hosts AICTE Design Thinking and Innovation Orientation for Schools

Guwahati: Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU) hosted a one-day Teachers’ Training Programme on Design Thinking and Innovation at its Azara campus on Friday. The programme was organized by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell (MIC), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), and the Department of School Education & Literacy.

Around 70 educators from 25 schools across Assam participated in the orientation, which combined conceptual sessions with hands-on classroom strategies. National experts from IIT Bombay, Jellow Labs, Suncity World School, and Nodes guided the training.

Professor Ravi Poovaiah from IIT Bombay opened the sessions with an introduction to design thinking principles, followed by Rupa Chakravarty from Suncity World School, who emphasized creativity-driven pedagogy. Prajakta Kulkarni, founder of Nodes, unveiled a Teachers’ Manual and assessment resources for structured classroom use.

From the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell, Ashish Tripathi outlined ongoing initiatives to nurture creativity among school students and highlighted support mechanisms for sustaining innovation beyond workshops. Dr. Ajanta Sen of Jellow Labs introduced storytelling-based strategies to make design learning replicable and measurable in everyday teaching.

The programme concluded with a hands-on toy design studio where teachers created learning tools using simple, low-cost materials. The initiative aimed to empower teachers with practical methods to embed design thinking in curricula and foster innovation-driven classrooms across Assam.
