Goa Nightclub Inferno Claims 25 Lives, Three Victims from Assam Among Dead

A catastrophic fire at the luxury nightclub “Birch by Romeo Lane” in North Goa’s Arpora claimed at least 25 lives in the early hours of Sunday, leaving families across several states in shock. Among the deceased were three youths from Assam — Rahul Tanti and Manojit Mal of Cachar district, and Diganta Patir of Dhemaji — whose deaths have sparked grief back home.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conveyed deep sorrow over the tragedy, extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a swift recovery to those injured.

The blaze, suspected to have been triggered by an LPG cylinder explosion, tore through the nightclub within minutes. Officials said the interior was lined with highly combustible materials, allowing the fire to spread rapidly and block escape routes. While three people died from severe burn injuries, most victims succumbed to heavy smoke inhalation. At least six others were hospitalised with varying degrees of injuries.

Authorities revealed that the casualties included four tourists, fourteen staff members, and seven individuals whose identities remain under verification. Several workers were reportedly trapped in the basement, including three women, who had little chance to escape as thick smoke swept through the enclosed space.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, after inspecting the site, described the incident as a deeply painful moment for the state. He announced that a full-scale inquiry had been ordered to determine the cause of the suspected LPG blast, assess compliance with fire-safety norms, and examine the structural legality of the establishment. He assured that those found responsible would face severe legal consequences.

Rescue and identification operations continued through the morning as officials worked to hand over the bodies to the victims’ families. The incident has reignited discussions around safety standards in commercial venues, particularly high-capacity entertainment spaces that often draw large crowds.

Investigators are expected to submit a comprehensive report soon, even as families in Assam and other states await the return of their loved ones in grief and disbelief.
