Gogoi Questions SIT’s Role in Zubeen Garg Death Probe

GUWAHATI: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has accused the Assam government of failing to deliver justice in singer Zubeen Garg’s death, questioning whether the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had placed all relevant evidence before the court.

Gogoi referred to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s repeated statements in the Assam Assembly that Garg had been murdered. However, he questioned the effectiveness of the investigation, citing the successive grant of bail to people arrested in connection with the case as a source of public concern.

“There is apprehension among people that the SIT formed by Himanta Biswa Sarma was not constituted to deliver justice to Zubeen Garg, but to protect those connected with Zubeen Garg’s death,” Gogoi alleged.

He said the developments had left people saddened and surprised, claiming that the government had failed to meet public expectations for accountability.

Gogoi also described the alleged failure to secure justice for the singer as a major setback for Sarma’s political career. Referring to other allegations against the Chief Minister, including those relating to corruption and alleged activities associated with ULFA, he said the government’s handling of the case would remain a significant stain on Sarma’s political record.
