Guwahati: In view of the prevailing extreme cold weather conditions, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration has ordered the temporary closure of all government and provincialised schools in Guwahati to ensure the health and safety of students. As per an official advisory issued by the Inspector of Schools, Kamrup (Metropolitan), all government and provincialised educational institutions in the city will remain closed from December 31, 2025, to January 6, 2026. The decision has been taken with the approval of the District Commissioner, Kamrup (Metropolitan).
The advisory directed Heads of Schools to immediately inform students, parents and staff about the closure and ensure that no academic or co-curricular activities are conducted during the specified period. School authorities have also been instructed to make necessary arrangements to facilitate the smooth resumption of classes once schools reopen.

It was further stated that any additional instructions, if required, would be communicated by the district administration in due course. Meanwhile, private schools in Guwahati have been advised to take independent decisions regarding closure, keeping in mind the safety, health and overall well-being of students.
Guwahati has been experiencing a significant drop in temperature over the past few days. On Tuesday, December 30, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 19 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature on Wednesday is expected to dip further and hover around 13 degrees Celsius, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures to protect school-going children from cold-related health risks.
