Guwahati: In a bid to strengthen digital safety awareness among students, the NSS Cell of Gauhati University, in collaboration with Assam Police, launched the Cyber Hygiene Internship Programme on Tuesday. The initiative aims to equip students with essential cyber safety skills and promote responsible online behaviour amid the rapid rise of digital threats.
Inaugurating the programme, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta emphasised the increasing importance of cyber awareness in higher education. “Digital literacy now goes beyond mastering tools—it involves understanding online risks, safeguarding oneself and making informed digital choices,” he said, adding that universities must prepare students for safe and responsible digital citizenship.

Vivek Raj Singh, IPS, IGP (Training & Armed Police), highlighted that cybercrime is evolving faster than traditional crime, making young internet users particularly vulnerable. “Awareness is the first line of defence. Programmes like this empower students to stay alert and protected,” he noted.
The inauguration was attended by senior officials including Registrar Prof. Utpal Sarma, Dr. Hemanta Kr. Nath, and Dr. Ranjan Kr. Kakati.
During technical sessions, experts including Gitanjali Doley, APS, Shikhar Dwivedi, Shalini Rathore, and Deepak Das addressed students on topics such as secure passwords, safe browsing, identifying cyber threats, and preventing cyber fraud, phishing, and malware attacks.
The programme aims to create a digitally aware student community capable of navigating the online world safely and responsibly.
