Sivasagar: Gauhati University has distributed 5,000 educational kits among students affected by the recent floods in Assam’s Sivasagar district as part of an initiative to minimise disruption to their education. Of the total kits, more than 3,500 were distributed directly to students of 15 schools in flood-affected areas. The remaining 1,500 kits were handed over to the Office of the District Inspector of Schools for distribution among other affected students. The initiative was undertaken as part of Gauhati University’s social responsibility efforts, with support from the Gauhati University Press. A university team comprising Prof Dwipen Bezbaruah, Prof Bikash Gogoi and other members visited the affected areas and interacted with students despite challenging conditions.

Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta said natural disasters should not come in the way of a child’s education. He stressed that the university has a responsibility to stand beside students and communities during difficult times. The initiative aims not only to provide essential educational materials but also to encourage flood-affected children to continue their studies with confidence. Prof Ankuran Dutta, Director of Gauhati University Press, appreciated the university staff and faculty members involved in carrying out the distribution programme.
The educational kit distribution is part of the university’s broader flood-relief efforts. Earlier, Gauhati University contributed ₹25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. It has also provided relief assistance to affected families in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts and initiated efforts to scientifically conserve centuries-old Vaishnavite manuscripts damaged by floodwaters. The initiative comes as flood-affected schools in Sivasagar work towards resuming normal academic activities, with 49 schools expected to reopen by August 31.
