GU Students Block NH, Alleging Bias in Zubeen Death Probe

Guwahati: Tension gripped the Jalukbari area of Guwahati on Thursday after students of Gauhati University (GU) blocked the national highway, protesting alleged bias in the ongoing investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg.

Hundreds of students marched from the university campus onto the main road, demanding transparency and fairness in the probe. The protest soon escalated as demonstrators set tyres ablaze on the highway, disrupting traffic and drawing heavy police deployment to the area.

Chanting slogans seeking justice for the cultural icon, students accused the government and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of favouring certain individuals linked to the case. Some protesters clashed with police personnel while attempting to block vehicles, leading to minor injuries on both sides.

Police eventually dispersed the crowd and cleared the blockade, but student leaders have warned that demonstrations will continue until the government ensures a neutral and transparent investigation.

The protest marks yet another instance of growing public outrage across Assam over the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore, as calls for accountability and justice intensify statewide.
