A late-night armed robbery at a residential apartment complex in Guwahati’s Ganeshpara area has sparked fear among locals after masked assailants allegedly assaulted a woman at gunpoint and looted valuables from a businessman’s residence.
The incident took place late on January 19 at Snehsraya apartment complex under the Fatasil Ambari Police Station limits. The targeted house belongs to businessman Anil Deka, who was away at the time of the crime.
Police sources said four masked men arrived at the apartment complex in a white Swift Dzire. Armed with pistols and daggers, the intruders overpowered Deka’s wife, Karabi Deka, and the family’s car driver. During the ordeal, Karabi Deka was allegedly physically assaulted, with the attackers reportedly forcing a firearm into her mouth while threatening her with sharp weapons.
The robbers carried out the operation swiftly and systematically, completing the crime within about 40 minutes. They escaped with a large amount of cash, gold jewellery, and other valuable items before fleeing the scene.
Investigators suspect the robbery was premeditated, as Anil Deka was out of town after going to drop his daughter, who studies abroad. Police believe the gang may have had prior knowledge of his absence and planned the attack accordingly.
CCTV cameras installed in the apartment complex captured the entire sequence, providing key evidence for the investigation. Police reached the spot soon after being alerted and have launched a detailed probe to identify and apprehend those involved.
The incident has heightened anxiety among residents of Ganeshpara, renewing concerns about night-time security and the growing threat of organised crime in residential neighbourhoods.
