Guwahati Excise Department Cracks Down on Illicit Liquor Trade

Guwahati: The Excise Department in Guwahati has made a significant bust in its fight against illicit liquor trade. In a recent operation, the department seized a large quantity of foreign liquor originating from Meghalaya, valued at nearly Rs 7 lakh by the government and estimated to be worth around Rs 12 lakh in the market.

The truck carrying the contraband, bearing registration number ‘AS11 EC 0151’, was intercepted while en route from Meghalaya to Mizoram via Silchar. The driver, Sirajuddin, was arrested for transporting the liquor without valid documents. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Guwahati Excise Superintendent Debajit Nath, along with Circle Inspector Jivan Jyoti Choudhury and Deputy Inspector of Sonapur Excise Circle, Pritam Purkashyap.

The seized consignment included 132 cartons of foreign liquor and 1,109 cases. The Excise Department is investigating the source of the liquor and the network involved in its transportation. This recent seizure is a significant step in the department’s efforts to curb the illicit liquor trade in the region.

The Excise Department has been intensifying its efforts to combat the illegal liquor trade, and this recent operation is a testament to its commitment. With further investigation underway, the department is likely to uncover more details about the racket and bring those involved to justice.
