Guwahati Man Held for Filing Fake Theft Complaint to Cover Up ₹7 Lakh Embezzlement

In an unusual case of deception, Guwahati police have taken a man into custody for allegedly fabricating a theft complaint to hide the misappropriation of company money. The accused has been identified as Dhruva Kalita, an employee of a private firm, Paramount Developers.

Police said Kalita had approached Dispur Police claiming that ₹7 lakh had been stolen. However, officers became suspicious during initial verification after noticing contradictions in his account. A detailed probe was launched, which revealed that the alleged theft had been deliberately staged to divert attention from the fact that the money had been taken by Kalita himself.

The incident reportedly occurred during the daytime on Monday. Acting on specific leads, the police searched Kalita’s rented accommodation in the Sarusajai area, where they recovered the entire sum of ₹7 lakh. He was detained immediately following the recovery.

Officials said the case highlights how swift verification helped uncover the false narrative and prevent financial loss. Police confirmed that a case is being registered for lodging a false complaint and misappropriation of funds, and further legal proceedings will follow in accordance with the law.
