Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania Signals Possible Assembly Bid During Boko Visit, Extends New Year Greetings to Press Club

Guwahati, Jan 3: Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, recently returned to office for a second consecutive term, visited Boko on January 2 where he extended New Year greetings to members of the Boko Press Club and held discussions on key regional issues. Addressing journalists at the public Durga Puja hall, the mayor spoke at length about local concerns and ongoing developments in the area.

During interactions with the media, Sarania indicated that he is open to contesting from the Boko–Chaygaon Assembly constituency as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate in the forthcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections. He, however, underlined that the final call would be taken by the party’s central leadership, adding that he has full faith in the BJP’s organisational structure and internal decision-making process.

As part of his visit, the mayor also met 15 residents of Borchung village in the Boko Bandapara area who were injured in a road accident while returning from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s cheque distribution programme at Guwahati’s Gandhi Maidan on December 31, 2025. Enquiring about their recovery, Sarania assured the injured individuals that their situation would be conveyed to the Chief Minister for necessary attention.

Later, he interacted with members of the tribal community at Lankona village in Boko, emphasising the importance of maintaining close engagement at the grassroots level and understanding community-specific issues firsthand.

While the Election Commission has yet to announce the schedule for the Assam Assembly polls, political activity has begun to gather momentum across constituencies, with leaders from both ruling and opposition parties stepping up outreach efforts.

Mrigen Sarania first took charge as Guwahati Mayor in 2021, a tenure marked by initiatives in urban infrastructure, sanitation, flood control and the modernisation of civic services. Following his re-election in 2025, he has continued to balance urban governance with outreach in rural and semi-urban areas, maintaining a visible role in addressing public concerns and local development needs.
